“Six days into what should be the greatest month of my life, and it’s turned into a nightmare.” (Page 1)
Mark is trapped on the planet Mars in the somewhat distant future. As he tries to survive, he grows potatoes; he does various survival tasks while trying to keep his spirits up. Meanwhile, mission command tries desperately to get him home.
This plot, albeit is very thin. But the book is very entertaining as Mark narrates this book through a snarky, snide, cynical log entries. I read this book a long while ago and remember how funny and popcorny it is. This is perfect book for a beachy, summery read. Usually, Andy Weir, in my opinion, writes clunkers, so this one is the only one that I actually liked because Mark is so funny.
This book is recommended simply because it’s a great, popcorn, summer book. You'll not get a super deep plot nor well fleshed out characters. Even though Mark is the narrator, he is basically just the one dimensional snark with only a minute amount of worry coming through. But when you're out doing some leisurely activities during the summer, do you really want something deep?
