Introduction to the Library: Intro to Searching - Library Login Info

The Basic Search

Learning how to efficiently conduct a basic search within our library databases will help you to complete your research assignments. Below are a few concepts and tips that can help you master the basic search technique. For a more in-depth explanation, please see the "Searching" section of our Getting Ready for Research Guide

1. The Research Question(s)

Question MarkThe first step in any research project is to identify what information you need. Often, the information you need may be outlined in the assignment or project instructions. However, in open ended projects where you get to choose the topic, you will first need to identify a topic that can be developed and researched. Sometimes, this type of project is more difficult than a research project in which the topic is assigned.

A great way to begin to develop your topic is to frame it in the form of one or more questions that you will seek to answer. Finding information to answer these questions will help to guide your research.

Check out this tutorial on how to choose a topic: Choosing a Topic

2. Choosing Keywords

Keyword DiagramLook for the key words and concepts in your research questions. These words and concepts are a great starting place for your information search. You will use these words and phrases as your search terms in the library database. Unlike an internet search engine (e.g. Google, Bing, etc.), entering your entire question into a database's search box will not produce good results.

Don’t be afraid to refine your question(s) by using synonyms or key terminology that you discover along the way.

Example: Identifying Keywords from your research questions.

Your Research Question:  What is the effect of the interstate highway system on passenger rail service in the United States?

Some Keywords could be:

  • Highway system or Interstate Highways
  • Passenger rail service or train travel
  • United States

3. Conducting a Keyword Search in Gateway Search

If you are new to searching online library databases, the most familiar method will most likely be using a keyword search. Please view the following brief tutorial on using our Library's Gateway Search. (Please note, the Gateway Search box has been updated, but works the same way as the one shown in this video!).

4. Library Login Information

Please see this FAQ for Library username and password information.

Please note, you may not be asked to sign in if you have already signed into the student portal, your EGCC email, or Canvas.
