Although the boundaries of alternative energy are not commonly defined, alternative energy is deemed to be the set of energies put in place as a substitute for conventional fossil-based energy. It is generally accepted that the renewable energies are the main alternative ones.
The Economics of Integrating Alternative Energy: A Farm Case Study at Emerald, Queensland. by Powell JW, Welsh JM. National environmental objectives (Australia) have led to the development of government policies that create incentives for businesses to invest in renewable energy. These policies, increasingly affordable renewable energy and storage technology have aligned to deliver both economic benefits to farmers and co-benefits to the environment in on- and off-grid scenarios. This analysis aims to determine the economic feasibility of renewable and innovative energy systems to assist in reducing grid electricity cost for irrigation pumps and small industrial applications.

Life-cycle assessment of using liquid hazardous waste as an alternative energy source during Portland cement manufacturing: A United States case study by Holt SP, Berge ND. The goal of this study was to use life cycle assessment to evaluate whether using liquid hazardous waste as an alternative fuel source in cement manufacturing processes located in the United States improves system environmental impact when compared with a facility using coal. Results from this study indicate that replacing coal with hazardous waste reduces the environmental impacts associated with the global warming impact, acidification impact, and freshwater ecotoxicity, while the human toxicity impacts for cancer and eutrophication-related environmental impacts increase. Reducing grid purchased electricity by recuperating waste heat from the process, cooling the exhaust gases and generating electricity to offset electrical demand, could reduce environmental impacts associated with off-site grid purchased electricity and should be considered for further environmental impact reductions. In addition, these results confirm that there are certain positive environmental effects associated with the co-burning of hazardous waste during cement manufacturing and replacing fossil fuels, such as coal, with high energy content hazardous waste.

Emerging Tools for Energy System Design Increasing Economic and Environmental Sustainability. by FAN, Y. V.; PINTARIČ, Z. N.; KLEMEŠ, J. J. Energy is a fundamental element supporting societal development, particularly with the increasing dependency on the Internet of Things. It is also the main contributor to environmental impacts and subsequently, a potential sector for mitigation. Sustainable energy system design considers energy savings and energy efficiency, waste and consumption reduction, process efficiency enhancement, waste heat recovery, and integration of renewable energy. Emerging tools range from advanced Process Integration, modelling, simulation, and optimisation, to system analysis and assessment. This review covers selected emerging studies promoting sustainable system design, including the recent developments reported in the Special Issue (SI) of the 22nd Conference on Process Integration, Modelling and Optimisation for Energy Saving and Pollution Reduction (PRES'19). The primary emphasis was to enhance the economic and environmental performance. However, social factors were also highlighted as essential for future sustainable development. The discussion and analysis in this review focus on the most recent developments of (a) heat integration and heat transfer; (b) integrated and newly developed heat exchangers, (c) integration of renewables, and (d) roles in economic and environmental sustainability. The key results are highlighted, and future research ideas are suggested according to their links to a broader context.
