Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are a major energy source for living organisms and play a major structural role in nature. They are made up of carbon atoms bonded to hydroxide groups. They are grouped into families: monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides.

Lipids and Biological Membranes Oil, wax and fat are all lipids, a key biomolecule for sustaining life. They have wide ranging chemical properties but all are insoluble in water. Steroids are an important class of lipids that typically occur as hormones. Cholesterol is a sterol.

Photosynthesis This video illustrates the essential steps of photosynthesis and explains its vital role in converting light to chemical energy. It examines chloroplast structure and function and shows the steps of photosynthesis.

Proteins and Nucleic Acids The information for making proteins is contained in nucleic acids, which each contain millions of nucleotides. The code in which they are assembled helps cells replicate and build proteins. The best known nucleic acid is DNA, which stores the genetic information for nearly every living thing.
